| The Process to obtain a Learner's Permit & Drivers License The State of California requires that anyone applying for a license, under the age of 18, must complete the two-part process in order to obtain a Learner's Permit. Driver Education: Driver Education is the state required 30 hours of classroom instruction given by a licensed driving school or a state-approved online course. We, at Code 4 Driving School, offer a 30-hour online course. Once the student completes the entire online course, and enrolls in drivers training, they will be issued two certificates. (1) A Certificate of Completion of Drivers Education and (2) A Certificate of enrollment in Drivers Training. The Student will need to present both of these certificates to the DMV when they apply for their Learner's Permit and also be 15 1/2 years of age or older. While at the DMV the student will take a 46 question written test of which they can only miss a maximum of 8 questions. During the Driver Education course, the student will be prepared to pass the test. When the student passes the Permit Test, they will be issued a Learner's Permit. Please be aware that the Learner's Permit is not valid until the student completes one lesson of behind the wheel training with a licensed Driving School. Driver Training: Driver Training is the State required minimum six hours of Behind-the-Wheel training, broken up into three, two-hour lessons. Once the student has received their Learner's Permit, they will call Code 4 Driving School and schedule their first 2-hour lesson. After the completion of this first lesson, our instructor will validate the Learner's Permit and from that point on the student can drive with any California Licensed Driver who is 25 years old or older. The current permit law was enacted in 1998. The Permit Law states the student is required to hold their Permit for a minimum of 6 months and 1 day before they can apply for a Driver's License. During that six-month period the Parent/Gaurdian is required to drive with the student for a minimum of 50 hours of Behind-the-Wheel practice with 10 to those hours at night. The 50 hour requirement is in addition to the six hours of Behind-the-Wheel required with a licensed driving School. At Code 4 Driving School we recommend that the students three lessons be spaced over the six month time frame so that we are able to monitor the student's progress and insure that they obtain the skills needed to be a safe and courteous driver. Drive Test: Once the Student completes the six hours of Driver Training, Code 4 Driving School will issue them a Certificate of Completion of Driver Training. This is the form that will be presented to the DMV when the student takes the Drive Test. The student will only be allowed to take the DMV Drive Test when they are 16 years of age or older, have held their Learner's Permit for a minimum of six months and 1 day, completed six hours of Behind-the-Wheel training with a licensed driving school, and have completed the required 50 hours of practice with their Parent/Guardian. Once the student has meet these requirements they will be eligible to take the Drive Test at any California Department of Motor Vehicles Office. The student will need to make an appointment for the test. |
